We want you to perform well in your interview. The tips listed below in addition to the information
you get from us before each interview will help you be more prepared.
There are really three steps to fully preparing yourself for an interview, knowing yourself, knowing
the company and knowing the position. Each of these is equally important to a successful interview.
Also, consider how you will leverage the knowledge you have gained during your meeting – preparation
is key.
Know Yourself
The first step is to review your own qualifications. This step will make you much more organized and
fluent during the interview. You'll be less likely to have regrets after the interview about what you
failed to mention if you review the following areas of your background in relation to the requirements
of the position:
- Education, course work, seminars
- Skills and abilities
- Work experience
- Extracurricular activities and their value to you
- Strengths and weaknesses
- Values, likes and dislikes--especially as they pertain to your work life
- Career goals--clearly and precisely stated
Know the Employer
A standard part of most interviews is a question about your knowledge of the employer. It is
imperative to do your homework. A weak answer to this question is devastating. These are the
areas to learn about:
- History of the organization
- Products and/or services
- Primary clientele
- Current earnings
- Organizational structure, hierarchy, chief officers
- Major competitors
- Ranking among competitors
- Reputation
- Parent company and subsidiaries
- Prospects for growth
Know the Position
You should have a good idea of what the job entails, both in general, and as it exists in the
particular organization to which you are applying. When researching the position look for this
type of information:
- A typical job description
- Skills required
- Personal traits that are desirable in this field
- Salary information
- Growth in the field--how competitive is it?
- Current trends and major issues in the field
The place to start this research is with any written job description that the company provides. Spend
some time analyzing this and committing it to memory. You will need to draw on this information in the
interview.
Organizing Your Information
When you have finished your research of the employer and the position, match your skills, personal
traits, and experiences (jobs, internships, volunteer experience, academic courses and
extracurricular activities) with those that qualify you for this job.

Think through how you will present this information in a concise, organized manner. Your research
of the company and the position will allow you to present your case effectively.

Determine the most important material to present. Practice including this material in your answers
and strategize what to do if not asked for this information. There is usually a time for you to ask
questions and make comments at the end of the interview. If you haven't made some important point,
this provides an opportunity. Don't be afraid to bring your notes along to the interview and use them
during your conversation – the employer will be impressed at your preparation and it will show that you
know how to use your resources.
Learn as much as possible about the position, the company, and the interviewers themselves. The more
detailed information you have about the company and the position, the better prepared and more interested

Employers want someone who wants to work for them. Demonstrate this by:
- PREPARING QUESTIONS. No matter how thorough the employer is in the interview, you must ask questions. This demonstrates interest and thinking ability.
- ASKING, "WHAT IS THE NEXT STEP?" Tell the employer you were intrigued prior to the interview and are now even more.
- EMPHASIZING AREAS OF YOUR BACKGROUND. Think of specific examples that demonstrate this. Sell yourself and your abilities through play back.
- ASK FOR ANOTHER INTERVIEW. Accountants are typically not the most assertive interviewers; differentiate yourself by asking to be a part of the next round.
- THANK YOU NOTES. Do not forget to send a thank you note to everyone you meet during an interview. Get a business card from each person, then send a separate email message to all of them. Job decisions can be made quickly, so email can be a more timely way to let them know you appreciate their time and want to move forward in the process.

Ever draw a blank when an interviewer asks, "Any questions?" Interviewers expect you to ask questions. After all, employment is a two-way street. Preparing interview questions to ask in advance, shows that you've done your homework and are truly interested in the job. In fact, some interviewers might be more impressed with your questions than your answers.
It's a professional courtesy to withhold the bulk of your questions until the interviewer asks if you have any. Interviewers typically ask toward the end of an interview or near the conclusion of each phase. Of course, it's okay to ask a few questions to clarify matters, steer topics and such, as the interview progresses. For example, a question such as, "What does the ideal candidate bring to this job?" would be appropriate early in the interview. But wait until it's "your turn" before you fire off a barrage. On the other hand, if the interview seems to be drawing to a close before the interviewer asks if you have questions, ask if it's okay to ask.
Avoid asking questions just to impress the interviewer, and asking frivolous questions just to have some to ask. Also avoid asking questions that might reveal more about you than the job. For example, the question "What happens if I fail to meet a project deadline?" has underlying implications, such as "I've often irresponsibly missed project deadlines."
Unless the interviewer mentions the topics first, it's not a good idea to ask questions about vacation, sick days, lunch breaks and so on, right off the bat. Granted, they're part of the whole employment picture, but from an interviewer's point of view, asking such questions too early in the interview game might indicate that your priorities are in the wrong order. Ask about what the company can do for you and lesser matters of importance during follow-up interviews. Better yet, wait until you're reasonably sure you have the job offer in your pocket; instead, ask questions about the job, the company and your interviewer.
It's okay to write down your interview questions to ask beforehand, and then refer to them during interviews. It shows that you're organized and interested enough in the job to have prepared in advance. Also, since you should be taking notes during your interview, feel free to add items to your ‘list of questions to be asked later.’
The one rule when asking questions is pretty obvious, but still worth mentioning – do not ask a question that has already been answered through the hiring manager’s previous explanation. Of course, it is ok to ask clarifying questions, but don’t ask what a typical day is like right after the manager describes what a typical day is like.
